"Is The Asian Lead For Marvel's Shang-Chi "Too Ugly" For Chinese People?" - Street Interviews by Asian Boss

I've been meaning to post this a minute ago - which I though is an interesting and somewhat relevant video - at the very least for Marvel Studios' upcoming SHANG-CHI - ASIAN BOSS asked; "Is The Asian Lead For Marvel "Too Ugly" For Chinese People?"

The person in question, is Harbin-born Canadian actor Simu Lu, introduced in the role of "Shang-Chi", at the recent San Diego Comic Con.

Mentioned names include Taiwan's Eddie Peng, Vincent Zhao, Donnie Yen, Louis Khoo, Aaron Kwok, China's Wu Jing - images of who I've since featured below (most from IMDb and online), in case folks are unfamiliar with them. All mentioned are Asian-based actors I am familiar with, and no doubt as well to Asian fans. "Donnie Yen" is currently one name expended into the West, with his roles in Star Wars, Fast and Furious et al.

This is a "interesting" question and notion, what with Hollywood venturing deep(er) into the China market, and even surface aesthetics such as this (whom some might construe further) might impact perceptions and perhaps box office receipts? Hardly, I feel, as different strokes for different folks, but then again folks might end up going for where the money is - not is much for deeper concepts, other than the mighty dollar, or "yuan" - "filmmaking" is after all, a "business", innit? :p

I am still laughing about one of the references to "小仙肉" / Xiao2 Xian1 Rou4 / Xiǎo Xiān Ròu - referring to "delicate pretty boys", more likely seen in K-Pop boy-bands LOL
