WATCHING: THE VEIL KDrama

FYI: Moving forward, this blog-feature on "THER VEIL" contains reasonable broad-stroke'd SPOILERS, cheers.

We first witness the brutality of the main protagonist on board a ship at sea, which had been used by criminals who harvest the internal organs of the passengers, with the sonic SWOL'd Namkoong Min subsequently "rescued" by a special enforcement force who'd boarded the ship.

Within the first episode, we are introduced to the character of "Han Ji-Hyuk", who is a recognised agent for NIS ("Foreign Intelligence Bureau"), but has been reported missing and presumed DEAD for over a year.

We see him being returned to the fold, and (re)adjusting to the life he previously had, including colleagues with dubious intentions and reactions to his "return", or rather the script leads us to multiple doubts.

We see flashbacks to his life a year before, which showed his brutality (second time I used this term here, because all the actions shown thus far can only be described as such), and the murder of his fellow agents.

The main thing is, and what would be driving this series, is that Han Ji-Hyuk has lost his memories of that one-year lost, so he needs to find out what happened, and who did what, and as importantly, WHO IS THE TRAITOR?

And in a stroke of Arnold Schwarzenegger as "Douglas Quaid" / "Agent Carl Hauser" in 1990's "Total Recall", Ji-Hyuk retrieves a thumb-drive (the Go-To in most KDramas) which has a video recording of himself talking to the screen/camera, and detailing what "Ji-Hyuk" needs to do, moving forward. And this is at the end of Episode One.

And while we know what that thread in "Total Recall" turned out to be, I am bracing myself to see if this remains the same, or is just a "coincidence".

Through plenty of exposition and conversations, it is made known that chemicals were utilised to artificially "cut out his memories", and we witness his PTSD ("Post-traumatic stress disorder") exhibited within the first two episodes too. Plenty of "reeling from severe headaches", which echoed his previous KDrama "Awaken" more than I'd like, to be honest). Talk about a "fish out of water" story-device tho LOL

Can we say his is a "smart" agent? Or is he just a "efficient blunt instrument"? The first two episodes point to the latter.

Written by Park Seok-Ho, and directed by Kim Sung-Yong, "THE VEIL" ("검은 태양" - literally translated to "Black Sun") consists of 12 episodes (in Season 1), having launched September 17, with 2 episodes airing each week (on Fridays & Saturdays at 22:00). Network is MBC.

Besides Namkoong Min (whom I adored in "Hot Stove League"), the rest of the cast is unfamiliar to me, save for a few familiar faces, including Jang Young-Nam, Kim Do-Hyun, and Ji-Hyuk's colleagues in his newly assigned "NIS Crime Information Center". I am frankly looking forward to seeing the character pay-off, rather than the "action" - for if the first 2 episodes are any indication - is what the series will not be lacking in...!
