My Story Spoiler-Free Impressions of DC's JOKER

If you go into #Joker expecting a “superhero” movie, you’ll be disappointed. Their attempts at infusing comic book-lore touches weaved into the tale certainly do help nudge and "remind" folks with the whiff of familiarity, but perhaps that’s the “magic” of the brand name association - at this point I would hazard daresay a "more-Ledger, and less-Leto" vibe, but in actuality, this incarnation of "Joker" beats his own drum, or rather dances to his own tune.

But if you go in looking for a "serious drama" about spiralling insanity? And a overwhelming stench of societal commentary? You may well be rewarded for your patience. Take a huge whiff, and be embraced in it's pale monotone rainbow of decay, uncomfortably so.

Joaquin Phoenix the actor deserves all the accolades, as does director Todd Philips, although I can understand if folks say this is “glamourising” the fictional character, as I'd felt everyone's POV is valid (IMHO), but the fact (for me) is they had managed to imbue the character with pathos, and even relatability, for the story to be effective told ... after all, "we" are more likely able to relate to a down-on-his-luck-joe, then we would the aspirations brought to us by being a "billionaire crime fighter", isn't it? His "power" is insanity, brought to devastating reel-life here by Phoenix, and "chaos" is but the power-keg of a world "Arthur Fleck" is living in, a mirror universe of civilisation, regardless of era, cleverly done so, IMHO.

what I want to know is: Who the heck greenlit this movie in the first place? Because it was a hella ballsy move, to attempt to color their fictional characters, when most of their comic book celluloid incarnations have faltered since ... and the result is an exceptional work of cinema experience. THIS is the REAL deal. This is on a whole other level than what you expect "comicbook superhero movie" to be, and have been taught to be "familiar" with.

IF this is the direction DC has decided to take their films (maybe not all, but), then sign me up for seconds and thirds.

Now, imagine the movie WITHOUT the character / name association, then this might well be deemed / would be deemed "an exceptional watch", innit?

Cheers and enjoy your watch.
