Character Portraits for THE NEVERS
Since my last feature showcasing the characters, I'd watched and thoroughly enjoyed THE NEVERS (mid-season finale coming up next week too), and have gotten to know the characters in this "getting to know" series, and have since decided to repost them into a single blog-feature - along with a write-up of WHO they are in the show, and my impressions of them. I will continue to add to THIS blog-feature when more are revealed.
Meet Amalia True: Laura Donnelly introduces viewers to the "complex" Amalia True, her powers, and who her enemies might be.
"The most irresponsible, spontaneous, and psychologically broken hero of 19th-century London, and a danger to the British elite. She is dedicated to her cause and never turns down a drink."Amalia possess the ability to see glimpses of the future, which occurs at seemingly random times, where she is mentally flashed into and/or is brought to the environment of where she is to be, all within a second or two. Imagine "Blink" from The X-Men, of she flashes forwards and back from "Days of Future Past".
We see more of her in Episode 5, quite literally - which makes me sound like a creeper, but in this instance to "warn" viewers that this series is definitely NOT for kids and is as ADULT as possibly can safely be, on HBO. Think adult situations in "Game of Thrones", and you'll get the idea. Let me say this again, The Nevers is "NOT A XMEN CARTOON".
Meet Penance: Ann Skelly discusses Penance's workshop and inventions and why her character is the “loving” leader of the Touched.
Amalia's best friend, and a Touched with the power to 'see' electrical energy patterns and a skill for inventing. Her powers instinctively reminded me of "FORGE" from The X-Men. Wiki describes Penance as "both religious and heretically progressive."
Meet Mary Brighton: Eleanor Tomlinson opens up about what makes her character Mary Brighton so special, and the influence of her turn.
"Mary Brighton" is a failed singer who has a "big surprise ahead of her", with her song decrypted by Myrtle in Episode 4, which pushes forward what Amalia is to do in subsequent episodes. And from the trailer for mid-season finale Episode 6, we might get a answer, if not a cliffhanger for the second half of Season 1.
SPOILER: Will we see Mary again, after her tragic passing in Episode 3?
Meet Annie Carbey "Bonfire": Rochelle Neil explains how playing Annie was “empowering.”
"Bonfire" is a criminal with the ability to generate balls of flame. One of the more visual members of The Touched, she is not shy about showing off nor using her powers. Saying she is a "criminal" is not wrong, but she is also not a mindless thug or croonie, but has shown intelligence and a sarcastic wit that is deliciously fun!
Meet Frank Mundi: A just world needs those willing to explore the unthinkable. Ben Chaplin describes his character Frank’s “infamous reputation” and the complexities of his emotions.
Frank is one of the "normies" (my own term for "non-metahuman" :p) in this series, which Wiki described as "a gruff policeman with a strong sense of morals. He has a reputation for violence and heavy drinking." But he has shown himself to be quite the moral compass of "justice", amidst his own glaring flaws, and shady pasts, but pushes forward even with the burden, and I really liked that about how they wrote him to be. And he has a connection with Mary in the series, which I will not spoil.
The actors behind "Augie Bidlow" (played by Tom Riley) and "Hugo Swann" (played by James Norton) discuss their characters’ unlikely and unique friendship and their individual quirks.
And while I do not have the complete list of what other CHARACTER PORTRAITS to expect, I certainly am looking forward to find out more about:

- Pip Torrens as Lord Massen
- Denis O'Hare as Dr. Edmund Hague
