WHAT-IS: "Mars Attacks! is a 1996 American comic science fiction film directed by Tim Burton, who also co-produced it with Larry J. Franco. The screenplay, which was based on the Topps trading card series of the same name, was written by Jonathan Gems. The film features an ensemble cast consisting of Jack Nicholson (in a dual role), Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, Rod Steiger, Tom Jones, Lukas Haas, Pam Grier, Natalie Portman, Jim Brown, Jack Black, Lisa Marie, and Sylvia Sidney in her final film role." (Wikipedia / Watch movie on Amazon).
I remembered being pretty jazzed about this film, primarily because of "Tim Burton"! But having watched this once, I teetered on the brink of falling off the "Burton"-wagon, with 2001's "Planet of the Apes" being the death blow (1999's "Sleepy Hollow" delayed the inevitable).
And while I giggled, laughed and gleefully star-watched upon my first watch ... then I remembered being turned off by the then bloated list of actors in the film (above screengrab via IMDb), and actually felt "offended" by the multiple appearances, very much like latter Wes Anderson's films (from "Moonrise Kingdom" onwards), where it felt like a summer break romp, then anything remotely "cinematic" (in my mind, of course). That said, I obviously missed the intent and caricaturist humour, innit?
THAT said, I certainly partaketh of the toys and collectibles, and even this trading card series...! So maybe my memories of the film NOW might have changed thru the years? LOL
And watching the trailers (for this post) left smiles on my face and fade memories, so maybe it my current views are tainted by time? :p
