POPCORNX's TOP TEN FILMS of 2021 (CINEMA ONLY Version)
WARNING: Movie Spoilers Ahead ... plus a lot more personal TMI you might want to read about, so yeah... :p
I've come to acknowledge to myself and accept that "2021" wasn't a "great year". Less of a "B Movie" (that was "2020") but instead a off-sync "C" Movie trying to pass a "A" Movie it had riffed-off of.
Beyond the fear of COVID and having my jabs, "work"-wise had not been fruitful as well. 2020 offered a sliver of "hope", but was dashed pretty quickly and the entirety of the year was fraught with apprehension of the/my future, and the uncertainty of what "tomorrow" would mean, and I had been waiting for an answer ever since, at the edge of anxiety, shimmering in anticipation for the pin drop that never came... or maybe I'm not convinced by what I hear...?
And while I understand I might not be alone on this sinking ship, my lifestory echoing around the world, although I am the one who'll be hosting my own pity-party on my own island where the world revolves around.
As much as I'd also come to accept that my tastes have become exceedingly "basic", the films I've seeked out had one sole expectation from me: To Entertain. I seeked entertainment, enjoyed what I could get, and brush off the bad ones (I'm still debating whether or not to do THAT list ;p).
Unlike my youth (which I considered peaked at late-30s), where I actively sort out what we would call "arthouse" films - to be able to experience something "different" than that the commercial films would offer - be it quirky surprises and muffled unanswerable queries which follow your mind even as the film credits rolled.
Having been surviving the recent years, since my Stroke in late-2010, I've chosen not to delve into these past celluloid journeys, as I realize my mind WOULD wander forth down the edge of the cliff, as I'd found the deft of work to distract me then.
That said, I'd also realised my viewing expectations as well changed and morphed into something I might not have agreed with (not too long ago), especially the past couple of years, and have admitted defeat from 2021. With that I have also to terms with, to accept and embrace my final decisions for my TOP TEN FILMS OF 2021 ON POPCORNX...!
The Matrix Resurrections said it perfectly and aptly: "Nothing Comforts Anxiety Like A Little Nostalgia", and nostalgia indeed embraced me and my fears, and made me smile in my heart, if even for a sliver of a moment's baited breathe.
Caveat#1: I had debated whether to include "streaming movies" in the list, against movies that were shown in cinemas (as well as some where streamed), and I do not have enough streaming movies (Netflix, Amazon, HBO Max, Disney+ etc) to form it's own TOP TEN as well, so for now it'll be purely just "FILMS RELEASED IN CINEMAS", and once when I sort this list out, I'll compare both Cinematic and Streaming Films lol
IRONY: I have not stepped into a cinema for the entirety of 2021, so the point is dearthly moot ~ hyukhyuk
Caveat#2: Would this list be any different of I had watched SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME, ETERNALS, OLD, REMINISCENCE, GREEN KNIGHT or THE LAST DUEL? Without a doubt, perhaps perhaps perhaps ... Maybe next year?
POPCORNX's TOP TEN FILMS of 2021 - #10: GOZILLA vs KONG
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT: Celluloid-dream made real.
WHAT I DISLIKED ABOUT IT: The mostly disposable and quite irritating supporting human cast.
WOULD I BUY THE DVD?: Yes, only to complete the trilogy.
Above: Best Fight Scene Ever.
LOVED GODZILLA.
LOVED GODZILLA KING OF MONSTERS (which I have since watched multiple times).
Could not deny KONG: SKULL ISLAND.
GOZILLA vs KONG was the spectacle promised.
I have watched GOZILLA vs KONG once, and a half, and will bathe in my fulfilled geekdom, but not actively seek it out for a second watch. Prepping for this post, I've seen my fair share of fights, so I remain hopeful LOL

POPCORNX's TOP TEN FILMS of 2021 - #9: SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT: A Personal Connection.
WHAT I DISLIKED ABOUT IT: Emotionally disconnected.
WOULD I BUY THE DVD?: No. I've never felt I needed to actually own MCU movies, as I'd be able to watch them on the telly pretty soon enough...
Beyond the CG-spectacle for the film's climax, the above fight-scene on the bus is downright invigorating and run to navigate, and one of the saving graces of the film, as far as I am concerned. Is fighting on a moving bus going to be a "trend" tho? There was also an invigorating one in "Nobody" too... :p
Not by intent, but I have since watched this film twice. First on my own (as most if not all my film-watches are, in this pandemic period), and a second time none too long ago with my family, during Christmas (Not watching it to celebrate Christmas, but...), and recognised the reason this film is on today's list was because of the feeling of having a "shared experience", watching it the second time with family.
Even before the pandemic, I'd watch films primarily alone, not least for the lack of want, but for simple logistical reasons (People are at work when I am free to watch films in the afternoon). And especially WITH the pandemic, I'd plonk myself down in front of the computer anyways, chips in hand, giggling to myself - which could be disturbing for folks looking in at the side, a dude laughing to himself with earphones on... :p
Not gonna lie, the music gave the film cohesivity, and helped tip this film greatly into the Top Ten, with big ups to 88Rising. Listen to the OST HERE.
The film is ultimately a generically entertaining Marvel film focusing on the "Asian American" experience (I'd be lying if I said I "could relate"), and the simple fact that Simu Liu spoke recognisable and non-cringeworthy Mandarin (Achievement unlocked), and Tony Leung spoke English not needing to be dubbed, was good enough for me. You could show me the world, but if I don't believe what I hear, it's just smoke and mirrors. In SHANG-CHI, I could enjoy the show.
I debated reviewing this film in it's entirety, but more likely will not have the patience to LOL

POPCORNX's TOP TEN FILMS of 2021 - #8: BLACK WIDOW
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT: Expands the mythos and story of a long supporting character that deserves more than she was given.
WHAT I DISLIKED ABOUT IT: It weaved in way too much MCU-lore than I was comfortable with, but also recognised it was needed to fill in the blanks for what has gone before and will happen next.
This movie felt like afiller issue "annual issue" of the main comicbook run, with a single story arc that was memorable enough, likened to that silent issue of G.I.Joe starring Snake Eyes.
WOULD I BUY THE DVD?: Not likely no, but will watch it again, and enjoy it if it's playing on the telly.
In many ways, Black Widow was one of the more emotionally heavy films of the MCU, in a very personal way, not borne of mass death or destruction, but of living a "lie" growing up. "Disappointment" versus "Grief", none need to be greater than the other, but one led to the other, as we knew from the get go, the passing of Natasha is an inevitability that Yelena will have to accept.
A lot of folks harp on the moniker "Superhero", confusing it most times with "super powers", with which Black Widows do not have (*Stingers/tasers are "apparatus / tools"), but in a world where Ninjas and Super Assassins have their place in power, Natasha and Yelena fit the mold and roles. With their dysfunctional but intact fictional family dynamics anchored on a manufactured lie that turned reality for those growing up in the lie, the emotional quotient is upped beyond them being "hired killers" from The Red Room.
Amongst the "generically entertaining" films Marvel produces (as mentioned above), BLACK WIDOW stands out somewhat slightly "different". And while the structure is familiar, the mood and tone iOS something I'd felt more "human" than other MCU films ... or perhaps it spoke clearer to me, as a non-Superpowered individual, than me attempting to understand how a Super Soldier, God of Thunder or Billionaire inventor in a metal man suit would.
This feeds into the MCU, but is not beholden to it, and one of the main reasons why I could adore this film.

POPCORNX's TOP TEN FILMS of 2021 - #7: NO TIME TO DIE
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT: Emotionally heavy on the past and the present. The deaths mean something. The past mean something. So much baggage and Kryptonite!
WHAT I DISLIKED ABOUT IT: Too emotional for a "007" film, but to be fair, it took me 5 films to help change my impressions of what a 007-film is, from the multitude of films before Craig's.
WOULD I BUY THE DVD?: Yes. I have all the run (except SPECTRE, which was a turd).
I've not imagined where there'll be a "James Bond" movie where they show the literal passing of the character. Sure there've been past story-devices (screenrant.com delves deeper), and understandably to maintain the existence and continuation of "007", they pass the mantle from actor to actor, at least in the "past". Since Daniel Craig's "Casino Royale" til now, it felt both like a revitalised franchise (as all runs with different actors might do), but as well a completion of a "mini-series" with Craig's passing, and so emotionally fuelled, it did not feel like a manufactured closure to a film (which of course it is, but). I have more words, still uncompleted...

POPCORNX's TOP TEN FILMS of 2021 - #6: ZACK SNYDER'S JUSTICE LEAGUE
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT: What I've felt "Superhero" movies could be done, and not needed to be quippy and fun. The Yang to Marvel's Ying.
WHAT I DISLIKED ABOUT IT: That this is the end of the Snyderverse.
WOULD I BUY THE DVD?: Yes, even though I've not even considered getting the Joss Whedon-version.
The film gave us a scope and history beyond the superheroes we see in the film for the past 30 years(?), and I ltolked that depth of history presented.
I have some words to share: "Deliciously flawed. Delectably indulgent. Flavoured with tears, marinated with desaturated shadows. Some might argue the dish is flawed and pretentious, and I will not argue their taste preferences. But this to me was succulently tender, with a fall-off-the-bone experience that will confuse my mind and not be able to look at another superhero-themed film the same ever again.... "

POPCORNX's TOP TEN FILMS of 2021 - #5: FREE GUY
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT: Most enjoyable Ryan Reynolds' Ride since Deadpool One (DP 2 was a stinker I could not not love).
WHAT I DISLIKED ABOUT IT: Oh fk I wish they'd not do a sequel, which I know they inevitably will.
WOULD I BUY THE DVD?: Actually I would.
I tweeted some impressions: "So #FreeGuy was amazing. Exciting & emotive, humorous & heartwarming, a mixtape of goodness about the power of goodness. Truly a product of our times, ironically so. 9/10."
FUN. FUNNY.FUN.

POPCORNX's TOP TEN FILMS of 2021 - #4: DUNE (PART ONE)
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT: Made me believe CINEMA can continue to be GREAT, and have a future worthy of patience.
WHAT I DISLIKED ABOUT IT: Wholly unsure if I have the patience for Part Two before my hopes fade or be eroded with crap films before it premieres.
WOULD I BUY THE DVD?: FK YES. But with all the behindthescenes online now, I question the need to even get the DVD.
I might have more words later ... meanwhile CLICK HERE for continued coverage on POPCORNX...!
#3: THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT: Nothing comforts Anxiety like Nostalgia, and I felt comforted, with a sly smile in my heart.
WHAT I DISLIKED ABOUT IT: It might have too smart-alecky for folks who refuse to get the memo. Too "meta" to be "breaking the fourth wall clever"?
WOULD I BUY THE DVD?: Yes, to add to the trilogy.
I might have more words, but perhaps none too intellectual nyuknyuk ... meanwhile CLICK HERE for continued coverage on POPCORNX...!
POPCORNX's TOP TEN FILMS of 2021 - #2: THE SUICIDE SQUAD
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT: What a Superhero film about super villains could be, and nobody else but DC be able to continually achieve.
WHAT I DISLIKED ABOUT IT: What a super villains film could be, and nobody else but DC be able to continually achieve.
WOULD I BUY THE DVD?: Yes, moreso than I would the David Ayer-version (sorry buddy).
We are laughing at two killers mass murdering allies, make and female - how twistedly delish is that? DopeAF! FLOL
I have more words Long, Non-Spoilery Version and The Short Version: "#TheSuicideSquad is relentless, merciless & bloody fun to the core & sentimental to the bone. Watching the myriad of clips & teasers both spoilt the moments-before-the-moments tho, but also brought a sense of recognition needed to enjoy the pace of the film. 8/10."

POPCORNX's TOP TEN FILMS of 2021 - #1: GHOSTBUSTERS AFTERLIFE
WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT: Wrapped by the well-worn overalls of Nostalgia, and am relishing the weight of the Proton Pack.
WHAT I DISLIKED ABOUT IT: Disposable side characters, including "ghosts".
WOULD I BUY THE DVD?: Yes. To go with my Ghostbusters 1 & 2 (Sorry no "Ghostbusters 2016" although I didn't hate it :p)
The above scene left tingles, and one of the key moments which helped elevate the standing of the film on this list today, thanks.
A very surprising last minute add, watched before the clock struck "fk-off-2021" and shot immediately up my list. Twice in the film I held my breath, and twice my entire body was washed with tingles of nostalgic joy and familiarity. The nostalgia was the key comfort. The newness of the characters balanced out the hokey ones, and even that I was okay with.
I will attempt to talk more about this in time, but if I don't: "GHOSTBUSTERS AFTERLIFE" is my ultimate "celluloid guilty pleasure of 2021"!
