FILMTALK with POPCORNX (Session 2 / Season 2)

I'll be introducing 4 films in this second session of FILMTALK (Season 2) showcasing a quartet of preloved films I have on DVD, since made available for sale at Miku Market, for a ridiculously low price point too, I might add! The 4 films showcased today are:

Black Swan (2010)
The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010)
Legion (2010)
Zombiology: Enjoy Yourself Tonight (2017)

WHERE: Miku Market @ 02-09, Queensway Shopping Centre, Singapore 149053.
WHEN: Open 12noon-6pm only on Saturdays & Sundays.

WHAT-IS: BLACK SWAN is a psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet, starring Natalie Portman as Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company (Mila Kunis). BLACK SWAN takes a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the duplicitous swan queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect. MY IMPRESSIONS: With most things by Darren Aronofsky, expect a none-so-subtle brainfk as you are lulled into a dread of hum disguised as everyday grind to survive and thrive. The actors are powerful, the story intense. It was somewhat hard for me to sit thru, honestly, but for the accolades that had built up for this film, I steeled myself to embrace it all ... Be prepared to have your energy drained out of you at the end tho, and you'll be grateful for it.

WHAT-IS: Disney's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is about a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice who are swept into the center of an ancient conflict between good and evil. (Source). This film is loosely based on the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" segment from Walt Disney's 1940 animated film "Fantasia".

MY IMPRESSIONS: I actually enjoyed this film more than what I've read about. This film, much like other "Nicholas Cage" films, entertained on multiple levels, much like his "National Treasure" films had, presenting a condensed world-building of a world beyond our naked eyes and understanding, complete with villain (Alfred Molina) and as ever the hapless "apprentice" in Jay Baruchel, all wrapped up in magical actionjackson in luminous green and blues. And any movie with Monica Bellucci is alright with me, thanks.

WHAT-IS Legion (2010): At a remote desert truck stop, the fate of the world will be decided. Evil's armies are amassing. Armed and united by the Archangel Michael (Paul Bettany), a group of strangers become unwitting soldiers on the frontlines of the Apocalypse. Their mission: protect a waitress and her sacred unborn child from the relentless, bloody siege of the demonic legion. (Source)

Directed by Scott Stewart (who also directed Bettany in 2011's "Priest"), screenplay by Peter Schink and Scott Stewart, this ensemble film is surprisingly packed with familiar faces and names, including Dennis Quaid, Charles S. Dutton, Tyrese Gibson, Lucas Black, Adrianne Palicki, Kate Walsh and Kevin Durand as Archangel "Gabriel".

MY IMPRESSIONS: This was far more fun that I remembered it to be. And somewhat "darker" than it lets up, which is always "fun" for a squimish viewer as myself (not full-on "horror"). As cliched as the Angels-on-Earth-trope is, it was a fun ride to see humans versus demons, and how some humans are dumbAF (as all Hollywood films are wont to showcase LOL). I have actually watched this film about three times now, and perhaps it is time to share them with other folks too... :)

WHAT-IS Zombiology: Enjoy Yourself Tonight: "When a monster from a popular animated show appears and starts a zombie outbreak, it's up to eccentric duo Lung and Chi-Yeung to stand up and fight the horde of the recently deceased, and save their friends from all around chaos!" (IMDb

This 2017 Hong Kong zombie-flick is directed by Alan Lo (Wai-Lun Lo on IMDb), and honestly I was attracted to the film by the DVD cover and promos (#truestory), which still remains sealed in its original plastic, having watched the film via "other avenues".

I SAY: Original language is in Cantonese - for which I am lacking in understanding with, and relied on English subtitles to understand the story - and honestly I feel I've missed whatever language nuances and depth presented, and I could only go by the guerilla-styled visuals instead to quench my curiosity and desire for "zombie films", because what I saw fell short of expectations, alas.
