I remembered hunting for the DVD of the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE film from 1987, having only seen snippets of a fabled live-action adaptation on godknowswhatformat, as well still images in magazines. You must remember, back in those days there was ONLY the television and silver screens, with zero digital support like we do now with YouTube, X/Twitter et al.

And when I found it in HMV Heeren, it took me a little bit more time before I decided to pay for the exorbitant price then (SG$36-ish, because "import"), and remembered feeling the exhilaration of discovery, much like when I used to hunt for discover "urban vinyls"...!

Watching it finally however, was a shock to my senses, for the disappointment outweighed the hunt. Perhaps I hyped the film and myself up too much... perhaps my tastes and preferrences has changed over the decades to accurately identify the reasons? That said, it still holds a snippet of nostalgic joy from my past, that I do treasure the entire sequence of hunting for the item.

Fast forward to today, with the teaser and trailer for the upcoming live-action MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, where I have grown significantly older, and expectations severely jaded, and my response to what I have seen so far, was not as bad as the vitriol I had been reading on my social posts about the film so far!

As far as I am concerned, every new incarnation of a project is a different approach to the original source I enjoyed as a child or whenever consumed when I was younger. If I had wanted a rinse and repeat of exactly the same thing - for example a live-action direct adaptation of the cartoon - I might as well (A) go back to rewatch the cartoon, or (B) Recreate it in, or seek Ai-made versions.

It is a personal taste scenario, I insist. Like when Disney remakes their animated films into live action with a direct adaptation, there will be a direct comparison of, and that does not appeal to me. It is as if I am made to rewatch the exact same thing, although I might react or emote correctly from animated cell form to CGI, but I am biased towards animation in the first place, so that does not fly well with me.

Cheers,
