SQUID GAME Season 2 Announced
WARNING: ABSOLUTE SPOILERS FOR SEASON ONE OF "SQUID GAME" IN THIS BLOGPOST.
The announcement of Season 2 of SQUID GAME was the last thing I saw before laying my head down on my pillow, and restlessly rolled about thinking I should be catching the news online, until I eventually succumbed to exhaustion and snored my way thru Monday morning ... then waking up to see the internet explode with the news. It's mid-Tuesday now, as I sit down to post about it, as even my nation's printed newspaper has reported on it (which is an indication for me how "old" the news had already become :p) ... that said. Let this be a record of what's been announced...!
Seen from the text image above, let me attempt to breakdown what we can expect for Season 2 of SQUID GAME... As stated at the beginning of this blogpost, everything thereafter are Absolute SPOILERS for Season One of SQUID GAME! Go it? GOOD, scroll thru...
"Gi-hun" returns"
The character of "Seong Gi-hun" AKA "Player 456" (played by actor Lee Jung-jae) was the protagonist that was the eventual winner of "Squid Game" in Season 1, whom we last saw before the credits rolled in the finale in red dyed hair.
"The Front Man returns"
Predominantly wearing a face mask, actor Lee Byung-hun was revealed ti be under the mask, and in the role of "Hwang In-ho", whom in turn was revealed to be the older brother of "Hwang Jun-ho" (played by actor Wi Ha-joon), whom seemingly fell to his death over a cliff, after being shot by In -ho.
"The man in the suit with ddakji might be back."
The unnamed man in question was played by actor Gong Yoo, who was credited as "The Salesman". This was what fandom wiki described him to be:
"The salesman is the first point of contact between the players and the organizers of the games. With his briefcase of cash and ddakji envelopes, he lures players in by offering them an easy way to make money. After several rounds of ddakji, he gives players a card with a logo and a phone number for the players to call for the chance to play more games and make money. If players wish to participate and call the number, the salesman instructs them to state their name and birthdate before allowing them to play."
"Gi-hun" first became aware of the Squid Game after being approached by The Salesman in a underground train station. Viewers - like myself - was first introduced to the Korean game "ddakji" in this sequence.
We saw The Salesman in Episode One, and in the finale,
"You'll also be introduced to Young-hee's boyfriend, Cheol-su"
"Young-hee" is the given name to the giant robot sculpt in the "Red Light Green Light" game, and is arguably one of the more visually iconic representations of the series on Netflix. It took me some time to realise that the doll even had a name!
And now the killer robot as a "boyfriend"? How many of you out there are ready to (A) Cosplay the character, and/or (B) Buy the toy? (Below image via @aashmxn1) LOL
Squid Game writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk sits down for a deep dive into the creative process with Oscar®-winning filmmaker Bong Joon-ho (Parasite, Okja). The two discuss the reach of Netflix's landmark drama series, the joys of exposing actors like Jung Ho-yeon, Lee Jung-jae and Oh Young-soo to an international audience, universal themes of social contract that Hwang had in mind when he conceived this story of desperation in a capitalist society and much, much more. I've previously featured this video HERE, but now seems a good time to revisit this, cheers.
In closing, here a are a few select clickable-links to SQUID GAME blog-coverage on POPCORNX, cheers.
